THE BULGARIAN PRESIDENCY OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EU : CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

The purpose of the current publication is to outline the general framework of the forthcoming Bulgarian EU Council Presidency , as a part of the Trio “Estonia, Bulgaria and Austria” by spreading light onto main issues regarding its substance, functions, agenda, priorities, opportunities and key challenges.

 

The priorities of the ongoing Maltese Presidency as well as the ones of the following troika are also evoked in the article.

 

Various foreign policy challenges of different nature are subject to comments and special attention is dedicated to the Brexit issue, the launching of the article 50 of the TEU procedure and the forthcoming negotiations concerning the conditions of the UK withdrawal.

 

The specific role and importance of the parliamentary dimension of the Presidency of the Council are also outlined.
